More than 10,000 people are on assisted accommodation waiting lists in Queensland alone, and numbers are growing. To help address this issue, the Y has built two housing facilities, Melville Place and Nowell B Taylor, to provide safe and and affordable housing for community members who need it the most.

We also work with tenants to address the issues that have contributed to their homelessness. We do this to help tenants become autonomous and independent individuals who feel empowered and in control of their lives.

With the Y’s support, the tenant’s quality of life is drastically enhanced as they become free of the issues and barriers that lead them into community housing.

Eligibility for tenancy of YMCA Affordable Housing units will be determined by the eligibility for Housing Assistance set by the Queensland Department of Housing. Prospective tenants must comply with Department eligibility guidelines, and are referred to the YMCA by the Department of Housing from the central waiting list.

Department of Housing Guidelines for eligibility of housing assistance includes meeting set criteria of:

• Residency
• Residential property ownership
• Independent income
• Household income
• Persons enquiring directly to the YMCA will be referred back to the Department of Housings Robina Housing Service Center to discuss housing eligibility and application.
